About

The quote is the most expensive thing you give away for free

Half a day. That is the real cost of a quote — the call, the drive across town, the tape measure, the drive back, and the evening at the kitchen table writing it up from memory and a photo of a wall. Do that four times a week and you have spent two days working for nothing, on jobs that mostly went to somebody else.

Every painter knows this and nobody has a way out of it, because the alternative has always been to quote badly. Guess from a phone call. Copy the last job that looked similar. Pad it, because you cannot see the room, and lose it to the painter who did not pad it.

So we built the other option: five minutes of video — filmed by you on site, or by the customer at home — turned into a room-by-room quote at your rates, on the screen in front of you, the same day.

What we believe

A number you cannot check is worth nothing

Every measurement says where it came from and how sure it is. When the footage was poor, it says so and asks you, rather than quietly picking something plausible. Software that hides its uncertainty is not being confident on your behalf — it is moving the risk onto you and not telling you.

The estimator is you

Nothing here sends itself. Not the estimate, not the price, not a follow-up. The app does the measuring and the arithmetic and then stops, because it has never stood in the room and you have. Every figure on the screen can be typed over.

Your prices, not our prices

We ship example rates so the thing runs on day one, and they are the wrong rates for you. One question — what would you charge for a job you know? — moves all of them at once. A painter in Auckland and a painter in Invercargill should not be quoting the same money, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Margin is not markup

Cost divided by one minus the margin, not cost times one plus it. The difference on a $6,000 job at what most people call forty percent is about sixteen hundred dollars, and getting it wrong for a year is the kind of mistake that closes a business quietly. The engine does it properly and shows you the workings.

Four things we will not do

Easier to judge a company by these than by what it promises.

We will not promise exact measurements.
They come from video. They are good, they are checked, and they are estimates — the day we call them anything else is the day one of them costs you a job.
We will not send anything to your customer without you.
You press the button, from your own number, in your own words.
We will not lock you in.
No contract, no minimum term, no phone call to cancel. Your quotes and customers stay yours, and you can take them with you.
We will not sell what your camera saw.
Your footage is stored against your account, reachable only through short-lived signed links, and never used to sell anything to anybody.

Who is behind it

PaintQuoteKing is built and run by M3 Digital Co Pty Ltd (ABN 25 644 823 085), a small software company working across Australia and New Zealand. It is priced in your dollars, it uses your words — skirting, architrave, weatherboard — and it knows the difference between ten percent GST and fifteen.

We are early, and we would rather say that than invent a wall of testimonials. If you try it and something is wrong, the fastest way to get it fixed is to tell us. We read all of it.
